The two cases of rape and murder, this week one of the Shepherd girl in Kathua in Jammu Kashmir and the other in Unnao , Uttar Pradesh have been moments of national shame. In Unnao, the survivor’s father died in police custody after he reportedly urged the force to register a case against the accused. The survivor has now been going from pillar to pillar, while living in the fear of losing her uncle, too

Union Minister VK Singh was first among central ministers to add his voice to the spiralling outrage over the gang-rape and murder of an eight-year-old in Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir, which has jolted India. “We have failed Asifa as humans. But she will not be denied justice,” the junior foreign minister tweeted.

Jammu Kashmir Chief minister Mehbooba Mufti tweeted “The Law will not be obstructed by the irresponsible actions & statements of a group of people. Proper procedures are being followed, investigations are on the fast track & justice will be delivered,” Mehbooba said in a tweet.

Bollywood celebrities, too, have spoken against the atrocities and expressed their solidarity. Celebrities have also called out ‘fake Hindus nationalists’ who were opposing the making of a charge sheet in the Kathua rape case. It was only after members of the Bakarwal tribe, which the victim was a part of, took to the streets to protest that the charge sheet was filed.
