In today’s world the basic necessity of a life, ‘clean and safe drinking water’ is out of reach for the majority of population but the major question is, is really the water in such a non-fit for drinking state. Are we over exaggerating the problem of clean drinking water? In today’s world, the people are overly concerned about clean drinking water to the limit that they are drinking water which has minerals which are way below the required level. The RO (Reverse Osmosis) water purification industry is cashing up on this fear of people. RO water purification industry is expected to reach a level of 26.65 crore by the year 2024 all due to the fear of people. Amost 6000 thousand units are sold per month in Lucknow. Do all the people need RO purification units? The answer to this question might be a big no. Hari Om from the2is.com researched the need for RO purifiers in Lucknow:
Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam, the government body responsible for supply of water in the state claims that the tap water in Lucknow is safe and pure. Sunil Mehrotra, a Junior Engineer of the Jal Nigam, says that the workers and officers of the Jal Nigam normal tap water. He also claimed that the overhead water tanks of the Jal Nigam are regularly cleaned and maintained. Besides, water quality is also regularly tested at houses of the residents. The Jal Nigam tries to keep the TDS level of Gomti Nagar and Indira Nagar at 10-20mg/l, which matches the level of TDS in bottled mineral water. This is because many high officials residing in the area demand that level of purification, added Mehrotra.
Less TDS Leads To Complications
Toxicologist Dr. Amit Kumar, says that RO water purifiers are necessary is only a few areas in Lucknow where the quality of piped water is not good enough. According to Dr. Amit, drinking water with less than 80 mg/liter of TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) gives rise to the problems such as high blood pressure, gastric and ulcer, chronic gastroenteritis, goiter, problems related to pregnancy, jaundice, anemia, fracture and problems in metal development of infants. Water purified by RO has about 40 to 50 mg/liter of TDS which might give rise to such problems.
According to Dr. Kaushalkant Mishra, when the level of minerals in the water decreases the body suffers from mineral deficiency. To maintain the required level in the body, bones start secreting necessary minerals in the blood stream which ultimately leads to hormonal imbalance.
According to the Central Laboratory of U.P. Pollution Control Board, the process of Reverse Osmosis removes various salts, heavy metals besides bacteria and pathogens from water. If the water sample has more than 1000 TDS, it is not safe to drink. The lab in-charge informed that the groundwater can used without filtration. RO is basically used for eliminating coliform bacteria from the water which is found in the surface water. Some RO machines have TDS adjuster which can be used to control the level of TDS in the water.
Lucknow Water safe!
Lucknow’s water has 300 TDS level which is well under the safe limit and hence, is drinkable says Shekhar Gupta, a RO distributer. But many a times this water is contaminated by seepage of sewer water in pipelines. When pathogens and metallic impurities seep in the water pipes, RO purification becomes a necessity, added Shekhar. However, not all area of Lucknow requires RO purifiers. But areas like Hussainganj, Daliganj, Narhi require RO like purification.
RO purifiers are needed in cities like Raibareli, Lakimpur, Delhi and Mumbai.
How to test TDS level in water at home?
TDS level in the water can be measured by a TDS measuring machine. The machine costs Rs 2000. The Jal Nigam and Jal Sansthan also checks TDS level.
